From 1990, we have been involved as The Pen & Pencil Gallery in the sale, purchase, valuation and restoration of old writing equipment. Our experience is primarily concerned with the period from 1600 to 1950 and includes items referred to in the Writing Collectables image. We also have a wealth of experience in restoring pens and pencils which 20 years ago stimulated the establishment of a modest publishing activity concerned with books for beginner collectors.
We are members of the Writing Equipment Society and The Pen Collectors of America and enthusiastically support both organisations. We also support a local charitable activity of Cumbrian Cerebral Palsy, for which we sell our main flagship book “Collecting Old Writing Equipment”.
This site is intended as the sales interface for our current activity and one can find fountain pens; dip pens; quills; pencils; cedars; porte crayons; inkwells, ink bottles, ink-stands; blotters; rulers; steel nibs; penners; baradelles; wafer seals; identity seals; postal scales; desk knives; quill knives; quills; quill machines, pen-parts and a variety of books, catalogues and ephemera.
Descriptions will usually be short and concise captions, but should include country of origin, age, components, condition, provenance, reference if available and price in £ sterling or US$ if required. Condition and descriptions can be subjective but we have a scale of 5 from excellent(1) to with flaws(5) and will, whenever possible, include reference to significant journals and books where the actual or similar items have been illustrated and described.
The range of writing equipment is extensive and the categories for sale are summarised below. Writing was a complicated procedure from preparation of materials to receipt of letters, invoices or deeds. All of the frames below are collected by someone somewhere so please do browse the product sale sections including the miscellaneous and books/ephemera because there are always some hidden gems for someone. Do please email your wants and wishes.
